About the Department

The Department of Arts prepares students to develop their creative vision, technical expertise, and professional practice through a rigorous liberal arts education grounded in artistic inquiry. Through studio-based learning, individualized faculty mentorship, and interdisciplinary exploration, students develop the artistic, technical, and critical thinking skills needed for careers in the creative professions, education, and graduate study.

Special Opportunities

The Studio Art concentration within the Bachelor of Arts in Art serves as the major for students pursuing Albertus Magnus College's undergraduate Initial Teacher Preparation Program leading to the Art, PK–12 (042) endorsement.

Students may also enrich their artistic education through coursework in music, including Introduction to Music, Fundamentals of Music, and Jazz, exploring music theory, appreciation, and performance within a liberal arts curriculum.

Experiential Learning

Art students apply their creativity through hands-on learning experiences that prepare them for professional practice. Every student completes a credit-bearing internship with design firms, museums, schools, nonprofit organizations, arts organizations, or other community partners while developing a professional digital portfolio throughout the curriculum. The senior experience culminates in the Practicum and the Senior Project, an independent capstone presented in a public exhibition, demonstrating students' technical proficiency, creative vision, and readiness for careers or graduate study.

Department Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of a degree in Art, students will:

• Demonstrate technical proficiency and creative problem-solving within their chosen artistic discipline.
• Apply principles of visual literacy, design, and art history to create original works of art.
• Analyze and communicate artistic concepts, processes, and historical influences through written, oral, and visual presentations.
• Develop a professional portfolio that demonstrates artistic growth, technical competence, and readiness for employment or graduate study.
• Engage in ethical and socially responsible artistic practice that reflects the College's mission and values.
