Mission

The Department of English develops thoughtful readers, effective writers, and critical thinkers through the study of literature, language, and written expression. Grounded in the liberal arts tradition, the department prepares students to communicate with clarity, analyze diverse perspectives, and engage the world with creativity, purpose, and intellectual curiosity.

About the Department

The Department of English fosters the skills of reading, writing, interpretation, and communication that are essential for success across academic, professional, and civic contexts. Through foundational writing courses, literary study, and opportunities for creative expression, students develop the ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage thoughtfully with diverse ideas and perspectives. The department provides foundational writing instruction through courses in Written Expression that support students in developing college-level reading, research, and writing skills. These courses emphasize critical thinking, effective communication, and the writing processes necessary for success across disciplines. Through the study of literature and language, students explore the ways stories, texts, and ideas shape human experience while building analytical and communication skills valued in a wide range of careers and fields.

Special Opportunities

The General English concentration within the Bachelor of Arts in English serves as the major for students pursuing Albertus Magnus College’s undergraduate Initial Teacher Preparation Program leading to the English, 4–12 (015) endorsement. 

Experiential Learning

English students have opportunities to apply their writing, research, and communication skills through internships and professional experiences. The English internship provides senior English majors with field-based learning opportunities that connect academic study with professional practice.

Department Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of a degree in English, students will:

• Demonstrate knowledge of significant works and traditions in British and American literature.
• Analyze how literary techniques, language, and cultural contexts contribute to meaning.
• Develop informed interpretations of literary texts through critical analysis and research.
• Communicate ideas effectively through oral presentations and written expression.
• Produce clear, coherent, and well-researched academic writing.
