The Bachelor of Science in General Health Sciences, under the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, is designed to help students pursue careers and/or advanced study in a variety of health fields. The healthcare industry is predicted to be one of the fast-growing industries in the coming years. Graduates will be prepared for entry to careers or graduate level programs in fields including physician assistant, nursing, nutrition, physical therapy, clinical laboratory science and more as well as assume roles as health/wellness professionals in private business and industry, community organizations, and healthcare settings. General Health Sciences majors complete at least one internship in their area of focus and are encouraged to pursue a minor in areas like Spanish and healthcare management.

The program includes instruction in basic biology and chemistry public and global health, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, microbiology and genetics.

The General Health Sciences major will enable students to:

  • Obtain an education based in the sciences, also including knowledge in public and global healthcare, and grounded in the humanities.

  • Understand and apply their leadership and healthcare knowledge through academic inquiry while using current, practical health care models.
  • Remember and evaluate their understanding of diverse populations in healthcare and to prepare the student to take a leadership role in the rapidly changing healthcare environment.
  • Allow students to evaluate the political, social, legal and ethical issues that may be encountered and have an impact on areas of health care practice.
  • Develop knowledge that helps bridge between clinical care, health care diversity and critical inquiry.
