First-Semester Academic Dismissal and Automatic Appeal

Traditional Undergraduate students who earn below a 1.50 cumulative GPA in their first semester of coursework will be academically dismissed from the College. However, such students will receive an automatic appeal and will be placed on Academic Review for the following semester.

Students placed on Academic Review are required to:

  • Meet regularly with a member of the First-Year Academic Advising Team to monitor progress and develop success strategies.
  • Limit their course load to no more than 12 credits during the following semester.
    • Exceptions may be made for students whose required laboratory courses result in a total of up to 14 credits.

Students are notified of their automatic appeal and review status in the academic dismissal letter issued by the Dean of Academic Affairs after grades are finalized each semester.

Right to Appeal

All students who are academically dismissed have the right to appeal their dismissal decision.

  • The appeal must be submitted in writing to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) or the Dean within one week of receiving the official notice of dismissal.
  • The written appeal should include:
    • The reason(s) the student believes dismissal should be reconsidered.
    • A summary of any extenuating circumstances (e.g., illness, family emergency, or other personal challenges).
    • A plan for improvement outlining steps the student will take to achieve academic success if reinstated.

The VPAA or Dean will review the appeal, consult relevant academic staff as needed, and render a final decision in writing.

If the appeal is approved, the student will be reinstated on Academic Review for the following semester under specified conditions. If the appeal is denied, or if the student does not appeal within the required timeframe, the dismissal stands.

Readmission After Dismissal

A student whose dismissal is upheld may apply for readmission to the College after one year by submitting a formal application through the Office of Admission. Readmission is not guaranteed and will depend on evidence of improved academic readiness. Students seeking to readmission must follow the procedures outlined in the Readmission After Dismissal section of this catalog.

Financial Aid Appeal

Please note that the appeal of an academic dismissal is separate from the appeal for reinstatement of financial aid. Students seeking to regain financial aid eligibility must follow the procedures outlined in the Financial Aid section of this catalog.
