Students may complete up to 20 percent of the credits required for their degree program on a Pass/Fail basis. In addition, students may elect no more than one Pass/Fail course per semester, Winter Term, or one course per two modules in accelerated programs.
The 20 percent maximum includes:
- Courses elected by the student under the Pass/Fail option;
- Transfer courses accepted by the College with a grade of Pass; and
- Courses approved by the Academic Policy Committee to be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
The Pass/Fail option may not be used for courses in a student's major or minor, nor for courses designated by the department as required correlatives. If a student later declares a major in a field in which an optional Pass/Fail course was completed, the major department may determine whether the course will satisfy major requirements. The department may not convert a Pass/Fail grade to a letter grade.
To elect the Pass/Fail option, a completed Pass/Fail form must be submitted to the Registrar by the following deadlines:
- Traditional Undergraduate courses: within three weeks of the first day of class;
- ADP 6-week courses: within one week of the first day of class; and
- ADP 8-week courses: within two weeks of the first day of class.
- Winter Term: deadlines are published annually in the Academic Calendar and may vary based on the length of the term
Students should consult the Academic Calendar for the applicable deadline.
Requests submitted after the applicable deadline will not be accepted.
Once approved, the Pass/Fail option is irrevocable. A course elected under this option may receive only a grade of Pass (P) or Fail (F) and may not be changed to a letter grade.
